“Being made redundant at the age of 60 left me feeling like I had very few options.”
Jim contacted LEMIS+ team at Job Assist Centre Greater Shankill after being made redundant from Bombardier Aerospace - his employer of 22 years.

Having worked all his life – switching between roles with Harland and Wolff and Belfast International Airport – Jim joined Bombardier in 1995. Feeling like he had few options after redundancy, Jim contacted the team at Job Assist Centre on the Shankill Road as they had helped his wife find employment in the past.

Matched with a Mentor, Jim was initially interested in securing employment in the field of manufacturing and production but he was also aware that there was a decline in this sector. Using his Mentor’s knowledge, they discussed additional careers such as Security and Driving with LEMIS+ able to provide the free training needed to begin applying in these fields.
Over a few months, Jim worked with his Mentor to identify transferable skills and experiences as well as undertake training in areas such as ICT, First Aid and World Host. When the opportunity to join the LEMIS+ Security Training programme arose, Jim was happy to sign up – adding elements such as Door Supervision, CCTV Licenses, AccessNI and Security Licenses to his CV.

Speaking about his experience, Jim said:

“The training provided was first class and was made even more enjoyable and stress free by the step by step help I received from my Mentor and other staff. My Mentor helped me to apply for jobs, recommended appropriate training and kept me informed of local Job Fairs and Employer Days.”

Since joining with LEMIS+ Project, Jim has been in contact with G4S, who are keen to source a suitable role for him, as well as Translink. We wish him all the best!
